DESCRIPTION

A cabin stands on a hillside ridge overlooking the Cota Valley, a municipality in the Bogotá savanna, at an altitude of 2,566 meters above sea level. The house finds its origin in the story of another houe built in 2007 in Sisga, which served as our office’s foundational work: butterfly-roof cabin built using the offcuts discarded by sawyers during the logging of a pine forest. The commitment to stripping away the unnecessary is the common thread connecting the questions of the past with those of the present, and in conjunction with that appreciation of the primitive life that is in the promise of inhabiting a cabin.

The property is situated in front ofwooded area that shields it from winds descending from the east and extends itselfas an orthogonal volume oriented toward the west and distant views. The undulating terrain necessitates that great care be taken to elevate the structure on stilts.

The spaces are organized along a linear volume moulded with actions that define the interior comfort and the relationship with the immediate soil, the more immediate. At either end, the bedrooms terminate in box-like structures housing the closets, providing privacy and depth to the modular wooden windows, which owe a great deal to Japanese architecture.

The spirit of the materials is manifested thanks to the hands of building chief Arbey, who knows like nobody else the material of which it is made this mountain. The exercise of inhabiting is felt in the warmth of the life that Mary, Lion and Anabel give. Daniel Molina was the architect in charge, and Matthew Perez was behind the lens for these photos in September.
