DESCRIPTION

The Popular Theaterwill be located in the Plaza de San Bartolomé, a natural setting of the city that has hosted markets, performances, fairs, and a wide range of temporary uses throughout its history.

In the heart of the project there is a question about how can a civic dialogue be convened around the Plaza de San Bartolomé. A place where so many layers of embedded history can be activated through small gestures of re-signification led by diverse groups of residents.

In the context of this installation, collective memory is a vehicle to evoke new emotional responses triggered by the transient mediation of a structure that invites to be appropiated in diverse forms. As a freestanding object within the plaza, it presents an appearance that shifts between opacity and translucency depending on the viewing angle: it is compact enough to provide shade for those gathering at a spontaneous performance space facing the party wall of the San Bartolomé church, enlivened by plays of shadow and projection. It is also porous enough to allow passage to unsuspecting pedestrians crossing the Rodríguez Paterna alleyway, transforming the space in unique ways throughout the day through the interplay of light.

From its scale to the expression of its timber scaffolding, they have a playful nature and a holiday that evokes celebrations, popular in both close and distant to the culture of Logroño. Its scenographic quality is rooted in a traditional construction method based on assembling basic units made of reclaimed timber frames; these are combined to form a structural whole that is remarkably lightweight yet robust. It is a tradition that speaks to crafts still very much alive in both popular culture and the art of theatrical carpentry.
