“Acciones de E-cosecha” MAMM Installation Medellín 2009

DESCRIPTION

For the inaugural intervention at the MAMM’s new headquarters, we proposed that, for five days, the museum become a platform for social interaction and a center for civic action. A demountable installation, spread by word of mouth, invited visitors to take part in one of the city’s major concerns.

Relationship with the city

We understood the intervention as an opportunity to extend beyond the limits of the museum. We proposed an action that directly involved visitors: an active, demountable installation capable of dispersing throughout the city, creating a lasting memory and a sustainable contribution.

Harvest Cartography

The project (E-Harvest Actions) is based on an element that visitors can take home: a gift from the MAMM. The modules consist of 2,009 biodegradable bags measuring 30 × 30 × 40 cm, filled with rice husks, a lightweight organic industrial waste material that gives them shape and structure while in use.

Open System

At the beginning of the exhibition, the bags function as construction units—like bricks—forming a spatial structure that, through different configurations, complements the museum’s main hall. Over the course of a week, the initial arrangement transforms through the interaction of different social groups and public activities, ranging from lectures, concerts, and workshops to everyday situations such as neighborhood meetings or an afternoon nap.

Shared action

The bags contain different types of seeds: native shrubs, flowers that attract pollinators, and aromatic herbs. Each type of seed is identified by the color of the bag. Symbolically, anyone who decides to take one home—it is free—enters into a collective agreement: to plant its contents somewhere in the city, whether in a private garden, a park, or along a sidewalk. Once emptied, the bag can later be reused for shopping or as an everyday accessory.

Museum visitors have since shared photographs and videos with us showing the different ways in which they have used the bags and planted the seeds.
