Project Details

“La Forma del Futuro” La Tertulia Museum Installation Cali 2017

DESCRIPTION

The exhibition brings together works by renowned artists such as Edgar Negret, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, Carlos Cruz-Díez, and León Ferrari, among others, offering different perspectives on modernity. The installation is supported by pine timber columns connected by beams that guide visitors through the exhibition. Its design also incorporates metal, translucent surfaces, and vegetation, creating a material dialogue with the artworks while proposing that “the shape of the future will be one of diversity.”

Urban planning exhibition

La Forma del Futuro (The Shape of the Future) is an Exhibition + Laboratory that brings works from the Museo La Tertulia Art Collection into dialogue with works by contemporary artists who offer different perspectives on modernity, and particularly on modern art and the modern city, its utopias, and its crises.

The works are integrated through a structure that introduces a kind of urbanism within the gallery, emphasizing the ways in which spatial relationships condition the meaning of each piece. At the end of the room, an agora-laboratory provides a space for activities, group work, and individual experimentation based on the themes raised by the exhibition.

Containing One Structure Within Another

The installation consists of a sequence of pine timber columns interconnected by beams that guide the route while supporting furniture, lighting, and display planes. Together, these elements construct specific spatial situations that establish a dialogue between works from the Museum Collection—including pieces by Edgar Negret, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, Carlos Cruz-Díez, and León Ferrari—and recent works by four contemporary artists: Elías Heim, Adrian Gaitán, Alberto Lezaca, and Santiago Caicedo. By drawing attention to relationships between forms, the exhibition proposes reflections on sustainability, machines, biopolitics, technology, and the tension between the organic and the synthetic.

Different Technological Registers

The installation evokes spatial experiences defined by the broader concept of hybridity. Corridors, roundabouts, agoras, and highways appear as fragments of the city and become references within the exhibition route. They allow visitors to explore unusual relationships of proximity and visibility between the artworks, while also creating the possibility of wandering, getting lost, and finding one’s way again.

In designing the installation, we thought of the images of megastructures through which 1960s utopian groups and architects such as Yona Friedman, Archigram, and Superstudio imagined the construction of the future. The same logic guided the material selection of the project, bringing together metal, timber, translucent surfaces, and vegetation not only as a way of responding specifically to each artwork, but also of reaffirming something that can now be observed from the present: the shape of the future will be one of diversity.
