DESCRIPTION

We began this exercise with the premise of building a habitable toy, in which size and parts served as a way to anticipate the encounter.

Nos guiaba la intuición de saber que, además de una herramienta recreativa, estos objetos son un medio sútil para expresar emociones. También la sospecha de que, como tantas otras cosas, un juguete puede enseñarnos maneras de habitar el mundo.

The original question involved making use of an inaccessible corner created by the inclination of a roof pitch in a 1930s house. It also entailed considering the nature of the relationship between two young girls and the family’s non-human actors. In other words, the piece needed to embody a certain attitude for anticipating modes of interaction that would take shape through everyday use.

Its own location creates a corridor that can only be occupied by the girls' imaginations and the curiosity of the two cats that round out the pack. Let us remember that when we are so close to the ground, life is all about exploration, and this piece of furniture is, above all, an invitation to pass through, move around, crouch down, or climb.

As a setting for family life, it serves as a backdrop for daily routines, filled with simple mechanisms, such as revolving doors, grates, and secret hatches, that invite exploration: there is a small theater with tiered seating on either side, a desk, a toolbox, a library, a tunnel, and a space for contemplating the Rhodesian.

It is also a shelf that holds all those cherished possessions: stuffed animals, and more stuffed animals, art supplies, puppets, balls...

Playful enactment also offers a natural setting for role-swapping: allowing adults to be children, or enabling children to explore the ethical principle of caring for others.

All of this is built on the premise that this toy could be timeless and accompany the family for many years, or even a lifetime: transforming from toy to piece of furniture, from furniture to bookcase, from bookcase to object, and so on, into the next generation. In this sense, the object serves as a reminder that seemingly simple questions offer the best opportunity to challenge the boundaries of an idea and to think beyond immediate function.

Thanks to Juliana, Eduardo, Elena, Eloisa, Cleo, Seneca, Kira, all of this multispecies family for its openness and its playful spirit. Daniel Molina and Luis Carlos Garzón for participating in the design and construction process.
