Grupo ImasD Offices – Medellín 2016

DESCRIPTION

The office project occupies the fourth floor of a four-story mixed-use building bordering a stream in Medellín’s El Poblado district. Grupo ImasD is a packaging, strategic design, and innovation company with ten years of experience that required new facilities capable of accommodating flexible workstations, co-working spaces, and activities that encourage creative thinking.

The architecture of the office results from organizing the program according to a logic of privacy versus socialization. Meeting rooms, the administrative office, the innovation room, and the fabrication workshop are contained within pavilions, while the co-working area, waiting room, workstations, and dining areas remain open and occupy the spaces between them.

The perimeter of the project has been kept completely open, concentrating all service areas—including restrooms, storage, and kitchen—around the building’s fixed core. Along the façade, a 1.50-meter-wide corridor is maintained to maximize visual connections with the surrounding context and with the gardens of fruit-bearing shrubs planted along the adjacent balcony.

The pavilions are built from metal profiles assembled on site and clad with independent enclosure systems, with the intention of making their construction closer to a process of assembly than conventional on-site building. White and clear laminated glass is used toward the façade and entrance corridor, while the lateral enclosures vary according to the degree of privacy required: timber panels for the meeting rooms, microperforated metal sheet for the administrative room, and thermo-acoustic panels for the fabrication workshop. The ceilings are resolved with glass-fiber composite panels covered by die-cut veils with graphic patterns, while the floors are finished in fiber-cement sheets with blue, yellow, and magenta epoxy paint.

To respond to the need for flexibility in how the space is used, the project integrates writable surfaces, modular tables, stepped seating, rotating screens capable of serving two different areas, and even the possibility of moving one of the pavilions to enlarge the co-working zone. Suspended service trays are also detached from the slab to provide connectivity at any point in the office.
