Banco de la República Museum Shop MAMU 2012

DESCRIPTION

For the shop of the Banco de la República Art Museum, the project proposes an autonomous, freestanding installation: an object positioned somewhere between a three-dimensional, inhabitable shelving system and a sculpture that completes and establishes a dialogue with the entrance hall. The volume adopts the proportions of the existing space—a parallelepiped—while simultaneously dematerializing and losing visual weight through its woven construction.

Structurally, meshes are lightweight, stable, and highly efficient elements. In this case, they also establish a closer relationship with the knots, weaves, and artisanal techniques that are deeply rooted in Colombian material culture and represented in several pieces held by the Museum.

The proposed structure establishes a double condition for display: it fades into the background when supporting an object, but recovers its own sculptural presence when empty, avoiding the awkward impression of a conventional shelf that is partially filled or unoccupied. The project therefore shifts from a model based exclusively on shelving toward a hybrid system in which shelves are complemented by the possibility of displaying products on virtually any surface. Within a limited area, this considerably increases both the amount of merchandise that can be presented and the range of possible exhibition formats: suspended pieces hanging from the ceiling, display cases visible from both inside and outside the shop—from the plaza—and adjustable lighting systems, among others.
