House 19 – Turmequé 2022

DESCRIPTION

Following tradition is an experiment that has always worked. It is about being rooted in the rural landscape and celebrating it. It means assuming the responsibility to do something concrete in a specific place: accompany the mountain, acknowledging the land, and sustaining the refuge.

Two roofs, a stone foundation, fired clay, Grandmother’s gardens. Landscape before object.

Uncertainty is also a material of architecture. Although at times it may be heavier than stone, over the years one learns to work with it, holding it, by leaning on small certainties and subtle discoveries. Fortunately, that chain of encounters and missed connections gradually solidifies, one project at a time.

It is not unreasonable to think that an architect’s practice consists of a single great work, made up of multiple projects that are variations on the same question. It becomes increasingly clear to us how and why we return to familiar ideas, to find reassurance and to put them to the test.

Yet, despite this, nothing quite settles into place. The results stay open to the indeterminacy inherent in creating for someone else, in a different setting, with new variables; rediscovering that which we do not yet know how to name.
