DESCRIPTION

We start by saying that a kind of incantation is needed to foster an encounter between different temporalities that move among one another, meet, and collide, even if only for a few days. We were excited to put into practice the idea that “all built architecture is a vessel of matter and knowledge in imperceptible motion".

Mobilized by the implicit concept of a journey into the future, a theme promoted by the School of Public Administration’s 2023 Internationalization Fair, we designed a showcase to foster connections and explore the interplay of furniture, audiovisual media, photographic exhibitions, and intimate nooks arranged across different spatial planes.

Over the open void of the triple-height central hall of this 1983 building by Quijano and De Irisarri, we arranged three structures: two with a more horizontal orientation towards the ends and one predominantly vertical structure in the center. The spacing between them creates a large-scale installation that facilitates winding circulation paths, areas for lingering and social interaction, diverse communication formats, and the display of content across multiple levels.

Rectangular metal elements, featuring a single interlocking connection point, are the basic unit that forms the structures; this three-dimensional square module is repeated to meet the needs of the twenty participating embassies and institutions, accommodating tables, shelves, tablets, screens, and of course people, ranging from ambassadors and artists to booksellers, students, faculty, and attendees of the academic agenda.

Big sublimated fabrics capture the air and give body to the floating figures , especially in the visual relationship between the side modules and the central module.

The structures and its design with modular intelligence facilitate the assembly and disassembly, performed in a set amount of hours in a sum that not reach even a day.

For us, there is an existential sense of relief in continuing to use the material that once served as a display structure at the La Vuelta Book Fair, and which now reappears reincarnated as various forms of furniture, paying a small tribute to the Greek canon of the Doric column. In this circular cycle of materials, we know that a future life awaits the tubular structure.

There is a tension-filled force that these photos by Ojo Rasgado reveal: the structural theorical weight dissipates into a network of wire-like relationships, while the equally theoretical lightness of the fabric reveals its volume of air and appears to possess weight.

To conclude, a tribute to the process. We have worked closely and carefully with Laura Isabel Gutierrez, the producer of the event for the ESAP. In Yemail Architecture, we design, in addition to the architecture and the furniture, the graphics, with the return of Lucas Niecto, Santiago Baquero is the architect behind the models and drawings. Ejecutar and G2 have been key in the manufacturing and installation, as TecnoRental for audiovisual equipment. Natalia Carrero has been the mind behind moving all the threads that have made this project possible.
