«Centro del Pensamiento Coomeva» Gallery – Cali 2016

DESCRIPTION

The Centro del Pensamiento Coomeva (Coomeva Center for Thought) emerged from an initiative by the company—the largest cooperative organization in Colombia—to consolidate a space capable of making its historical evolution visible while also generating and promoting reflection and knowledge around cooperative culture and the solidarity economy.

Based in Cali, the Center develops exhibition programs and shares the history of Coomeva, founded in 1964. The architectural program is organized into four areas according to use: exhibition, administration, work and consultation, and social interaction. The space dedicated to the Center for Cooperative Thought occupies the ground floor of the building: a horseshoe-shaped area of 226 square meters with a clear height of 2.83 meters.

The permanent exhibition follows a chronological sequence, tracing Coomeva’s development over time. It begins with an introduction to the broader context and origins of cooperativism in Colombia and around the world, continues with the history of the institution from 1964 to 2005, and concludes with a projection toward the future and a reflection on community life.

The exhibition devices are organized along two axes that intersect the different bays of the project and establish a spatial framework from which circulation is structured. These axes consist of a sequence of standardized steel columns supporting double-sided exhibition panels suspended away from both floor and ceiling, along with signage, multimedia devices, and lighting elements.

Taking advantage of the geometry of the existing space, the project also creates a projection area that can function as a meeting room and presentation space for induction processes or small groups. At the end of the exhibition route, visitors arrive at the Documentation Center, which includes an office, archive, and consultation area, as well as an educational space designed for small training sessions, short courses, and workshops for different audiences.
