DESCRIPTION

For its tenth edition, the Bogotá International Art Fair introduced new exhibition content, curatorial formats, and gathering spaces for visitors. Recognizing that major art fairs around the world also serve as natural settings for singular architecture and design projects, ARTBO 2014 proposed a spatial format intended to activate new forms of interaction, socialization, and exchange within the fair. The project included the design of furniture, spatial structures, signage, and lighting for the Forum, Artist’s Book section, Information Point, Rest Areas, and VIP lounge, using criteria of functionality, reuse, aesthetic experience, and flexibility across different formats of use.

The project begins with a set of basic criteria for temporary furniture: providing an aesthetic experience, minimizing materials and processes in order to optimize fabrication, and allowing the components to be reused after the fair. To achieve this, we selected three generic materials in an effort to standardize fabrication and dismantling, establish a recognizable language across all the areas of intervention, and construct an identity based on the decontextualization of everyday elements. We used CR shelving angles, taking advantage of their ability to be assembled and disassembled in very few steps; raw pine plywood; and white corrugated polycarbonate sheets.

The project explores the creative decontextualization of materials originally designed for specific uses unrelated to an art fair, but capable of acquiring new meanings when placed in a different context. In this sense, we understand the project as part of a postmodern tradition explored extensively in the work of architects such as Peter and Alison Smithson, Cedric Price, and the early Rem Koolhaas, among many others who sought to activate the implicit value of everyday ways of making and to work with the energy already embedded in ordinary materials and technologies.
