Ministry of Culture Pavilion FILBO 2017

DESCRIPTION

As part of the Jorge Isaacs Year, the Ministry of Culture pavilion for FILBo 2017 commemorated the 150th anniversary of the first edition of María, one of the fundamental works of Spanish American Romanticism. Located in Pavilion 6 at Corferias, the project proposed an installation dedicated to the life and work of Jorge Isaacs, as well as to the cultural and emotional landscape of the Valle del Cauca.

The pavilion was conceived as a sequence of rooms. Rather than a linear exhibition, the route offered a lateral and fragmented approach to the novel: small domestic-scale spaces contained sound stations, rear projections, images, places for reading and speaking, gathering areas, and spaces for talks and workshops. Each station activated a different aspect of the world of María: its historical context, its characters, its emotions, its landscapes, and the biography of its author.

The installation worked with large timber panels that defined boundaries, backdrops, and thresholds between the different scenes. Visitors could move through these fragments, encounter excerpts from the novel, and discover images associated with Jorge Isaacs, his life, and his work. In parallel, an audiovisual installation proposed an educational experience centered on the emotional situations of the novel and the memory of the Valle del Cauca landscape.

The project transformed a literary commemoration into a spatial experience. A pavilion for reading, listening, moving through, and briefly inhabiting the world of María: a temporary architecture built through words, images, memory, and landscape.
