NC LAB Pavilions 2016

DESCRIPTION

NC-Lab is a creative experimentation laboratory held every two years in Bogotá. It emerged as an alternative model of artistic pedagogy within the educational program of NC-arte Gallery. The project creates spaces for collective production and multidisciplinary artistic experimentation over four days, bringing together more than one hundred participants, including artists, mediators, and members of the public.

In 2016, the central premise was to explore relationships between body and space. The setting was a group of three monumental former auto-parts warehouses, where six autonomous installations were staged halfway between sculpture and museographic device. Six timber machines formed a catalogue of actions derived from basic geometries: triangles, cubes, and cylinders. The pavilions operated as tools of perception, allowing each participant to engage with the industrial atmosphere of the warehouses.

Together with each invited artist and the gallery team, every installation was developed through drawings, models, and conversations aimed at refining a specific intention. Timber was chosen as the common material for the entire ensemble because of its tactile quality, structural capacity, and potential for reuse.

At the entrance to the complex, a cylindrical structure composed of twelve timber modules functions as a scaffold into which cardboard tubes are inserted as lockers. A freight elevator leads to the gathering area, where different types of furniture support exchange and communal meals. At the center, a stepped seating structure conceals a café beneath it, while at the far end of the hall a cylindrical pavilion forms an antechamber to an empty space surrounded by a platform, where artist María Eugenia Díaz developed actions centered on encounter and disconnection.

In the second warehouse, a right-angled triangular structure is inserted between a series of concrete columns and transformed by artists Jaidy Díaz and Javier Vaquero into a performative ramp. In the adjoining hall, a 3 × 3 × 3 meter cube becomes a three-dimensional mesh that can be occupied at different levels, positions, and degrees of proximity, forming a laboratory in which artist Monica Hoff explores more sensory ways of approaching the other.

In the third space, an installation composed of eight elements of different sizes works simultaneously as furniture and as parts of temporary sculptures that artist Veronica Lehner assembles together with participants in her workshop. Finally, the agora is a mobile quadrilateral divided into two halves, allowing it to configure different settings for the conversations led by curator Rodolfo Andaur.
