EVOK Stores Medellín 2016

DESCRIPTION

Amplifying the Journey

The project is the architecture of Evok’s first store, a shop for snacks and chocolates that combine herbs, spices, and fruits. The spatial layout begins at one end through a recessed façade that forms an entrance niche. Along the sides, furniture of varying heights leads toward a double-height shelving unit that forms the backdrop to the checkout area and separates storage and staff services from the rest of the store. At the center of the space, three workbench-like tables organize the visitor experience into three stations: seasonal products, a tasting table, and the chocolate bar.

Unexpected Vault

The 6 × 14 × 4 meter space has proportions that create a pronounced sense of narrowness, contrasted by its considerable height. All existing installations were removed in order to expose the full height up to the structural slab. This condition made it clear that the ceiling would have a strong presence within the space and required a spatial strategy capable of creating atmosphere without becoming visually heavy in relation to the products on display. The response is a continuous vault supported at both ends of the store, beginning low at the entrance and rear, and rising to its highest point at the center.

Basic Materiality

The project’s material palette is based on neutral tones and a minimum of finishes and cladding. Floors, walls, and ceiling were constructed using ochre concrete pours and renders, allowing the surfaces of the space to be read as a single continuous volume. This material continuity contrasts with the family of furniture, built from lightly brushed zapán wood. The principal color accent comes from a hand-painted mural that connects the four corners of the vault through a botanical-inspired graphic language derived from the brand’s packaging.

Elemental Code

The store’s furniture shares a common material language based on dark timber, traditional joinery, and brass hardware. The lateral furniture is conceived as a continuous family of elements that alternate between display cases, shelving, storage, and separate product displays. Although their heights and proportions vary, they all rest on a continuous base that gives the composition a unified reading. The central tables are designed according to the logic of traditional carpentry workbenches, using robust timber sections and a direct, honest construction.
