Dry toilets as social structures 2014-2016

DESCRIPTION

This series of prototypes proposes small sanitation structures for rural contexts along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, particularly in territories with limited access to drinking water and insufficient sanitation infrastructure. Rather than isolated objects, they operate as social structures: compact, replicable, and adaptable units that integrate a dry toilet, washbasin, rainwater storage, solar lighting, and systems for separating solid and liquid waste.

Each prototype forms part of a closed cycle of soil care. Organic waste, treated through composting, is transformed into fertilizer for vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and productive plots.
The series has been developed under different conditions of use and assembly. In Palomino, one prototype was installed on Señora Basilia’s property and linked to a family garden. Another, built for Señor Jorge, introduces a variation with a side staircase and sits beneath a planted roof that provides shade and helps regulate the temperature of the structure. A third prototype was developed in Bogotá with architecture students from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana as a demountable structure, pre-dimensioned to be transported by mule to a farm in the highlands of Buritaca and assembled remotely using drawings and installation instructions.

Built primarily in wood, these structures test different degrees of enclosure, shade, ventilation, and adaptation to the terrain. Their minimal scale concentrates a broader question: how can a basic necessity be transformed into an infrastructure of care capable of connecting body, water, soil, food, and community?
