House 15 – Barichara 2020

DESCRIPTION

Latin America is a wonderful school for learning to make life a daily exercise in optimism and where it is traditional to train oneself to turn any set of limitations into an opportunity. Of course, this is not merely a matter of architecture, it is a cross-cutting conditionl; it is also true that through this are revealed to us multiple lessons on how to give back to the problems implicit in the idea of doing, whether an architect is involved or not. Practicing architecture is, to some extent, a matter of solving a spatial equation where the variables: such as site, regulations, budget, time, or crisis are not always compatible.
Since this year, we have been working on our first project for the municipality of Barichara, a small town in the north of the country where time has managed to synthesize material, nature, and the craft of building into a single landscape. It is also a laboratory where working entails incorporating a set of rules and constraints that remind us that architecture is a dialogue with tradition; there are beautiful examples of highly subtle and sincere works that have been built there over the decades.

This is a house built on a sloping site for a lovely couple and the full array of things they hold dear. The current confinement has also been an opportunity to recognize that the existence unfolds indoors and that a quality home is one of humanity’s noblest aspirations, representing, for most people, a tremendous measure of effort, persistence, and dignity. It reminds us that the ability to transform constraints into something positive is part of the magic of our profession.
