Workshop-House 21 El 22 - Socorro 2024

DESCRIPTION

Still we do not fully grasp what happened here. At what point in time the process of unburdening a house of its tangled memories became the home of a new spirit. How that mixture transformed into a path toward creative freedom, and made us understand that it makes no sense to inhabit that landscape without acknowledging the weight of its stones and the nobility of the land.

We know that it all begins with a conversation with Paulo Licona about how to fully inhabit the rural density of a place like El Socorro in Santander, Colombia. Sure those who appreciate details will notice that the spirit inhabiting the house is sustained by the tension between vernacular logic and popular picturesqueness. Also we have followed a path that does not pass through the homogenization of contemporary material.

Four years after envisioning ways to repurpose this place, the process of progressive construction is finding beauty in imperfection and vitality in the dialogue between what once was and what could be. he house naturally embraces both making and living, reminding us that architecture is also a dialogue with tradition and with the full spectrum of our emotional attachments.

Ultimately, quality housing is one of humanity's noblest aspirations, as for most people it entails a great deal of effort, persistence, and dignity. In that way, there are also ways to share and act in community.

For example, through the “Salón amable” format, a recurring gathering in the central courtyard, Paulo Licona explores new possibilities for intergenerational connection within a context shaped by an aging population. For a moment, the house can be a social device that defies the conventional boundaries between home, work space, and a meeting place between neighbours.

We struggle to deny the fascination that work-spaces produce. The tradition of inhabiting a workshop-house and create the conditions for life and the job to be a continuum.

The next phase of the project in the backyard will soon begin, featuring an extension that connects the courtyards surrounding the mango tree. It will also continue with its own schedule of meetings and collaborative work.

Thanks to Paulo Licona for the invitation to work on this project and discover the beauty of El Socorro. Also Jimmi Palacio and the Yemail Architecture team for their immense work.
