La Vuelta II Editorial Fair Installation 2022

DESCRIPTION

For La Vuelta 2022, we revisited the question of a more conscious relationship between the act of making, the material itself, and the waste generated by any type of installation, understanding repetition as a principle that fosters greater complexity in terms of relationships and processes. In part, this was achieved by seeking the highest degree of affinity with the material –in this case, two- and three-inch cardboard cylinders–, by understanding its form and limitations, but above all, the methods for reclaiming it. This material originated from the installation we created for Artbo, which involved an initial "hack" that transformed an industrial product into potential furniture. This time, we have treated the cardboard so that it can be reused once more before being donated to a recycling cooperative.

The installation of the pieces follows a certain logic of carpentry, yet it also reflects an aspiration to minimize material transformation, and, consequently, to employ reversible connections. This approach is both energy- and cost-efficient, allowing us to flip the equation: we could invest more resources in the labor force prioritizing the hiring of a diverse group of people with varied backgrounds, and take the time needed to construct this installation, which is designed to be arranged in four different ways depending on the number of books on display, creating a landscape of 65 units spanning three levels of the magnificent Virgilio Barco Library.

Thanks to Bibliored and La Vuelta for continuing to aim the power of the social interaction a fair fosters. Thanks to Mateo Perez for these photos that capture the energy with which the publishers filled every piece of furniture; to Sebastián Rivera and to all the Yemail Architecture team for their persistence; and to the more than 20 people, including technicians and assistants, who were involved in the construction. The event ran until December 11, 2022. Thanks to everyone who attended.
