DESCRIPTION

Let's imagine for a moment tha reforming a house is like operating on a living body. Meaning that it is the sum of procedures for removing, cutting, sewing, or splinting.

Let's now magine that this operation responds to an interconnection logic: reconnecting what was once divided, opening up tight spaces, looking for air to circulate and natural light to flood the rooms. Enabling the occupation of spaces that were previously inaccessible

In this 50s home in Bogotá’s San Luis neighbourhood, everything was akin to a surgical spatial intervention. About preparing to be headquarters of the Urgent Action Fund, a feminist organization that was seeking a venue for its diverse activities, paving the way for the spiritual connection that was to come. Thus, the interventions were guided by a desire to foster a dialogue between past and present, laying the groundwork for a new purpose to flourish.

In this project, we have explored ways of caring across multiple dimensions. This means that by understanding architecture as an act of healing, we recognize that the house expresses itself in its most essential way when we strip away the unnecessary and honor its material memory and the history of its construction crafts. As well as we extend delicately the garden and restore the original to establish a new dialogue with the neighbourhood.

Pero sobre todo, porque nos ha guiado el interés por el día a día de quienes habitarán los espacios: ¿Cómo facilitar un momento de sol matutino para acompañar un café? ¿Dónde podría encontrar refugio quien necesita concentración y silencio? ¿De qué manera propiciamos la cercanía durante los momentos de construcción colectiva? ¿Cómo disponer adecuadamente un espacio para hospedar a quien llega de lejos? ¿Cómo hacemos un lugar destinado al movimiento y la expresión corporal?

Ultimately, it is about architecture fostering an environment of mutual care and the building of community finding a physical home.

Architecture as conversation. The project is the result of a constant, collaborative dialogue between members of the Urgent Action Fund in Bogotá and Quito with the Yemail Architecture team: coordination and ideas by Natalia Carrero, design work by Jimmy Palacio and visualization work by Martin Jímenez. A special thanks to the team of teachers, carpenters, and makers who made it possible.
