Instructions to speak to birds Anti-pavilion – Punta del Lacho 2026

DESCRIPTION

Punta del Lacho, in the commune of El Tabo, is part of the so-called coast of the poets: a stretch of the Chilean Pacific where sea, rock, wind, and cultural memory converge alongside the voices of figures such as Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, and Nicanor Parra. At that edge, near the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile’s Coastal Marine Research Station, is an intervention developed within the framework of the CLASSROOM of LA ESCUELA___ and Residencia Barco. The site is understood not merely as a landscape, but as a living territory where birds, insects, vegetation, tides, visitors, and neighboring communities all share a common fragility.

Instructions to speak to birds proposes to transform a small natural terrace along the Punta del Lacho trail —a sloping nook nestled between rocks and delicate vegetation— into an eco-poetic observation station. Rather than a monumental installation, the project proposes an anti-pavilion: a minimal architectural intervention designed to slow down human presence and create a temporary form of permanence: perching, pausing, orienting oneself, observing, migrating, returning, or simply being, without causing disruption.

The piece is composed of a threshold entrance, two L-shaped benches that engage with the existing rock, a wind portal, weather vanes, bird perches, a listening cone, a combined drinking trough and rain gauge, an "apparition board", and small insect shelters integrated into the wood. These elements function as a family of curious devices: rudimentary instruments, fragile signals and small atention machines that do not explain the landscape literally but rather help us perceive it. Each one addresses a specific phenomenon of the site: wind, sound, rest, flight, water, writing, or the appearance of other forms of life.

Conceived as a small environmental classroom , the project invites visitors, children, artists, poets, and walkers to enter slowly, lower their voices, sit, listen, draw, and record what emerges when the body remains still.
